Being a metabolite of the essential, branched-chain amino acid, leucine, β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate is synthesised in the human body and forms an integral part in protein synthesis. It is also found in small quantities in food sources including grapefruit, alfalfa and catfish.
The human body is said to produce about 0.2-0.4g of HMB per day; supplementation of such can help individuals achieve the recommended daily dose of between 1.5-3g, which studies suggest can contribute to improved strength, muscle growth and recovery.
