Folic Acid, also known as Folate, also known as Vitamin B, helps form the building blocks of DNA and RNA, which are essential for protein synthesis in human cells. Therefore, tissues which are rapidly multiplying such as foetal cells during pregnancy, but also cells in the human body such as red blood cells which play a key role in oxygen transportation and white blood cells which are vital immunological defendants, and therefore folic acid is needed for these to function. A deficiency in folic acid can potentially lead to folate deficient anaemia's such as Megoblastic Anaemia, however studies show folate supplements can be used as part of a treatment plan for those who are folate deficient and can be quite effective too.
